Navela is an emergency contraceptive that can be used within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex or failure of your usual method of contraception. Navela contains a synthetic hormone-like active substance called levonorgestrel. It prevents conception of about 85% of expected pregnancies if used within 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse. It does not prevent pregnancy in any case and is more effective if you use it as soon as possible after unprotected sexual intercourse. It is better to take it within 12 hours than wait until the third day. Navela is likely to work by preventing the egg from being released from the ovary, preventing sperm from fertilizing any egg that may have been released, or preventing the nesting of an already fertilized egg in the uterus. Navela can only prevent pregnancy if you take it within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It does not work if you are already pregnant.
